What is Reiki?*
                               (pronounced “RAY kee”)

According to the National Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) Reiki is a biofield therapy which is intended to affect the energy fields interpenetrating the human body. Reiki and other forms of hands-on energy work are based on scientifically measurable energy fields emitted from the practitioner’s hands.

The Reiki Principles

Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor
and every living thing.

These five principles were written by the Meiji Emperor of Japan and used by Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926)in Reiki. (Dr. Usui was a Tendai Buddhist and monk. He was also a martial arts master in several disciplines.) A student of Reiki affirms these principles daily throughout his or her entire life. They are a summary of what Reiki is philosophically.  What Reiki is practically speaking is a Japanese method of stress reduction, relaxation and hands-on healing. The Japanese word Rei means universal, Ki means life energy (also known as Chi or Prana). It is a type of energy work. It is an art passed from Master to Student and is also a spiritual discipline which involves meditation, study, and daily practice.  Reiki is not a replacement for modern medicine. The National Institute of Health lists Reiki on its website as an alternative and complementary therapy. It is a vibrational therapy facilitated by light touch or hand placement just short of touch, in near proximity. It is believed to strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself.

Reiki Harmonizes on Four Levels

Physical - your body and its condition
Emotional - feelings past and present
Mental - your thoughts and thought processes
Spiritual - your capacity to love yourself, others, a higher Power and creation

You Participate in Reiki

Reiki works best when brought into your life as a whole. You may practice saying the Reiki Principles daily and begin to meditate. However, it is not a religion and may used by people of all religious traditions. It can energize your body’s own blueprint for health and well being.  Reiki often accelerates natural healing.
